Commentary Based On Books Forbidden Places
This was a looooong book with a varied cast of characters - set in England during WWII. Though a lot of the plot points were transparent and you could see them coming a mile away - still there were enough twists at times to keep me reading. This is definitely a soap opera type story about one family (and their friends) and the class system within England at that time and the ravages of war (but not so much). Most characters, unfortunately, in one way or the other were really rather unlikable and

3.5 starsCosy wartime saga set in London and rural England. Not the bonkbuster I normally look to Penny Vincenzi for, but an enjoyable read nonetheless.

This was a book I found hard to put down- a real romp of a story with tremendous characters and a few unexpected twists and turns. Readers are drawn towards Grace, have sympathy with her but, occasionally, will want to leap into the story and give her a good talking too-she is very much a wife of her times (1940s). I can't remember having read Penny Vincenzi before but I'll be back for more.

Swift beach read. Enjoyed this book. Not as good as her trilogy - no angel etc - but still a great vincenzi read. Definitely a page turner with twists and turns and surprises along the way!

An absolutely wonderful read!I think this book would have gotten far more deserved recognition as the wonderful saga that itis if the title was not so darn bodice ripping sounding. And why the Vogue cover of Dior's'New Lokk" from 1947 when the book covers 1938 to 1946??????

My AP English teacher keeps giving me these Vincenzi books. I loved her trilogy (beginning with No Angel) but now they are too predictable. Unfortunately, I have to read another one as she keeps asking me if I started it yet!! Maybe I'll be surprised!I actually liked it! It was an engaging story and kept me entertained while we spent 10 hours with no electricity during the ice storm yesterday. Is it spring yet?

The title of this book sounds like it would be something of a Harlequin Romance with lots of lust and seduction. I suppose it contained a bit of that but this was just a good, engrossing novel. Taking place in England during the war, it is the story of three women and their struggle and survival during the war. While some might say it wasn't much struggle, since they all come from or married into privilege, it does portray well what life might have been like for women of their class during the
