Each image will (or should) startle, awe or grip you. The reaction is immediate every time you turn the page. One of the best collections you're bound to see (though I do like "Life" magazine's photography almost as much), and a true testament to the human condition over the last 100 years.
I've seen a lot of comments here (and elsewhere) about "Afghan Girl," which stands as the penultimate photo recognized as a National Geographic photo. Yes, it's here and it's just as phenomenal as always. However, I latched onto many of the others more, most of which I had never seen because they were of times and places past. The two images that reached out and really impacted me are the one of the African wrestler's and the boy whose goats were killed by a runaway taxi. Power and total lack of power - just amazing.
On the off chance you both stumble upon both this book and this comment, I would love to hear what your favorites were as well. Enjoy!
One of the reasons why I bought my Canon.
Awesome. A real, enduring pleasure.

Absolutely WOW!! Amazing artistry and people picture inspiration my Nat Geo masters. Just enough information/ literature to bring back stories to each section of photography.
This book is exceptional, no doubt about it. I specially liked the ones that had long captions, describing the back story. But, there were two photos in there that represented persian (Iranian) people that alone, are false advertising. I mean, I wish there was at least one more photo from Iranians that didn't represent them as people of religion and/or benighted.I guess it's too much to ask, since this book was a selection of photos, but I'm just so tired of all this false advertising.Even though
Oh my goodness, there are some really incredible photos here, from the early 1900s on. I would dance a jig if I had taken any one of them. Fab.
how do you rate a book of pictures? i don't know how you do it, but i'll tell you how i did. it has some really iconic nat geo photos and is a great coffee table book. it has a handful of essays on photography/portraits from today's nat geo all-stars. those were interesting. it's certainly a quick and relaxing 'read.' so that's alot of good. that said, i object to some of the photographs being called portraits. they're not. i totally embrace a wider application of the term, and being
