Narrative In Favor Of Books The Last Chapter
The Last Chapter is set in the Torahus sanatorium, where the sufferings of most of the patients are related to civilisation.The novel has a group of central characters, but no distinct main character. Among the characters is "The Suicide", who entered the sanatorium following the discovery of his wife’s infidelity and threatens constantly to take his own life. Another guest is the lovely Julie d'Espard. She enters into a relationship with the bogus Count Flemming and gets pregnant. When Flemming disappears one day she turns to Daniel Utby, who runs a small farm near Torahus and who represents the novel’s ideological norm.
The Last Chapter is one of Hamsun’s darkest novels. It was written at a time when he was much preoccupied by death. The novel is often compared with Thomas Mann’s The Magic Mountain, which was published the year after.

He insisted that the intricacies of the human mind ought to be the main object of modern literature, to describe the "whisper of the blood, and the pleading of the bone marrow". Hamsun pursued his literary program, debuting in 1890 with the psychological novel Hunger.Alas my 19th Hamsun book in a row and fatefully the chapter last. Yes its a very dark novel but full of Hamsuns baring of the psyche and soul of humans. He returns, as always, to his wanderers, for even in the devotion to this earth life can be without meaning and like the wind. The theme of the intellectuality vs. blessed ignorance is at the forefront of this work maybe more than any other work. And love and passion put a thorn in everyones side. There are hints of industrial progress in thisI loved it. He writes beautifully and although it was first published in 1976 it is still Very modern.

Un roman excepţional. O colecţie de personaje unice în literatura universală, unde dramele lor îi unesc la Torahus, un sanatoriu plasat în munţii Norvegiei. Insă cel mai interesant personaj este "moartea", care atârnă ca un nor plumburiu peste sanatoriu, neavând idei bizare ca cele ale "sinucigaşului" ci îşi face treaba cu măiestrie.
