Bursting into life in the hands of Adrian Mitchell, here are 30 of the brightest, loveliest and most powerful myths ever written - stories of gods such as Jove, Apollo, Juno, Venus and Mercury and of mortals such as Daphne, Narcissus, Adonis, Phaeton and Persephone . Appraise Of Books Shapeshifters: Tales from Ovid's Metamorphoses
Filled with beautiful illustrations, this book celebrates the constant flux of the world, especially as told by Ovid in one of his most famous works. Gods, mortals, the earth itselfeverything is subject to change and the changes are breathtaking, weird, terrible or sad. Humans become stone or stones become human. People are cursed, often for no better reason than innocently offending a god. The wording shifts from poetryrhyme, blank verseor prose. All of it deals with a world that moves from one

Adrian Mitchell FRSL was an English poet, novelist and playwright. A former journalist, he became a noted figure on the British anti-authoritarian Left. For almost half a century he was the foremost poet of the country's anti-Bomb movement. The critic Kenneth Tynan called him the British Mayakovsky.

I adored this book. The illustrations were fabulous. The poetry was wonderful and the stories were spot on. The flow of myth to myth really helps to follow how they weave together, giving a great depth to the classic tales. I noticed a few things that I had never noticed in previous reading of these myths. I would hasten to say that some of it might be a little PG for younger kids but really it would recommend it overall.

The art was really beautiful!

For anyone not prepared to work their way though a complete Metamorphoses this handsome book is a great alternative. A good sampling of the more engaging stories from the Met, with an added bonus of spectacular artwork that carries over from page to page and cleverly links the stories together. The writing varies from a bit awkward to brilliant but the complete package really works together. It's a gorgeous book, although aimed at a YA audience will hold the attention of adults as well.
